The Azores, a group of nine Portuguese islands which form an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, lie about 932 miles / 1,500 km from Lisbon and nearly 2,423 miles / 3,900 km from the east coast of America. Eight of the nine islands are volcanic in origin and are the tops of the tallest mountains on earth -- when measured from their underwater bases. Mount Pico, on Pico Island, reaches a height of 7,710 feet / 2,351 meters, making it the tallest in Portugal.

The Azores enjoy a moderate climate, with mild seasonal variations. Found in the Palearctic ecozone, the Azores are home to mild-weather broadleaf and mixed forests, as well as a wide varitey of plant species.

With more than 20 identified species of whales and dolphins along the coasts, the Azores are one the best diving experiences on the planet. Additionally, the environment of the archipelago is one of the best habitats for sperm whales in the world, practically guaranteeing an unforgetable whale experience.

Air temperatures vary between an average of 54° F / 12°C in winter and 77° F / 25°C in summer. Water temperature averages about 72° / 22°C all year.
