Where is Tonga?
Tonga is a very small country, made up of 170 islands in the South Pacific
Ocean. In fact, the name Tonga means "south." Tonga is very far from any of
the continents in the world. The closest big place is Australia, and even that
is a long, long plane ride away.

What do Tongans do?
Many Tongans fish and farm to support themselves. Tongans grow yams, taro and sweet potatoes for themselves,
and squash, coconuts, and cassava to sell to other countries. They fish for tuna, and smaller fish like snapper. |
Do Tongan kids go to school?
Yes. Kids in Tonga go to school just like kids in the United States. Over 99% of Tongans can read - much higher than the percentage of people in the United States who can read.

Do Tongans hunt whales?
No. Killing whales is against the law in Tonga. Even before the king banned whaling in 1979, Tongans killed very few whales. |
